Visages du marché de Kentung (Shan State). Peut aussi s’écrire Cheingtung, Chiang Tung, Kyaingtong et Kengtong. Il y a donc l’embarras du choix.

Un peu d’histoire: Kentung fut fondée à la fin du XIIIe siècle par le petit-fils du roi Mengrai, de la dynastie de Chiang Mai. Elle faisait partie du royaume thaï de Lanna. Pour cette raison, sa composition ethnique est un peu différente de celle du reste de l’état Shan.  Au cours de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, Kengtung fut un des principaux objectifs de l’armée thaïlandaise, qui s’en empara le 27 mai 1942 et y installa son quartier général. À la fin de la guerre, elle l’abandonna avec l’ensemble de l’état Shan.

Hommage au pauvre des pauvres, le plus touchant certainement, celui qui mendit pour manger. Celui a qui les vendeurs du marché glissent un billet de « leur caisse » de la matinée dans son bol. J’ai suivi l’exemple…pour le remercier, sans qu’il le sâche vraiment, d’avoir posé pour la photo.

A little history: Kengtung was founded in the late thirteenth century by the grand-son of King Meng Rai, the dynasty of Chiang Mai. It was part of Thai Lanna Kingdom.
