The gashapons or gacha are machines that distribute small collectible figurines contained within transparent plastic capsules. They are everywhere in Tokyo, especially in Akihabara. They were invented in the late 70s by Bandai.
The principle is simple: you insert the coins, you turn the crank, and a ball will fall. The price ranges from 100 to 400 yen depending on the size of the figure (from 1 to 3 euros approximately). The ball opens in two like the Kinder surprise.
