The Mechua market is a bit of miracles, but not in the original Parisian sense. Miracles of authenticity, eloquence of the faces that deliver the depths of their souls. In the middle of this gigantic open-air market, I collected as many portraits in two hours as during the three weeks that preceded this visit. It is a fascinating and magical place as India can often be.
The Mechua Market is for fruits the biggest market of West Bengal. 1,500 migrant workers, most of whom come from the Bihar region, earn their living by unloading 150 trucks a day. The wholesale market not only provides fruit throughout the state, but also exports to other northeastern states and Bangladesh.
According to an article online indianexpress.com these workers earned in 2016 about 500 rps / day (6.25 €). This market population includes porters, sellers and auctioneers. Indeed in this market the lots (baskets) of fruit are sold to the highest bidder by an auction system. This market is known to be one of Asia’s largest fruit markets. But for me Mechua market is above all the most interesting place ever visited for the richness of its portrait gallery.
